Mayor Leo “Chipper” McDermott is a lifelong resident of Pass Christian. He was born September 22, 1949 to Leo McDermott and Myrtle Spence McDermott. Mayor McDermott is following a family tradition by serving as mayor: his grandfather, J.H. Spence, served as mayor of Pass Christian for 22 years, a record which Mayor McDermott feels will not be broken.
McDermott is a proud graduate of Pass Christian High School — “Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate” — and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss., in 1971. He worked at General Motors Acceptance Corporation for almost 25 years, until the site closed. He continued in the finance industry.
Mayor McDermott served as a member of the Pass Christian Planning Commission until his election as Alderman at Large in 1997, an office he held until 2006. He served as Mayor Pro Temp for his last five years as Alderman at Large, including in the tumultuous time period immediately after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.
McDermott was elected mayor in August 2006 in a special election and was re-elected to a full term in 2009.
Mayor McDermott has deep roots in Pass Christian and has been active in numerous philanthropic and civic groups. He has served as chairman of St. Paul’s Seafood Festival, the Pass Christian Blessing of the Fleet and the Pass Christian St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Mayor McDermott is a Rotarian and a former coach and umpire in the Pass Christian Youth League. He is former Grand Marshal of the Pass Christian St. Patrick’s Day Parade, former Grand Marshal of the Biloxi Hibernia Society, and former King of St. Paul Carnival Association.
Mayor McDermott is married to Jeanie Bishop McDermott. They have one daughter, Emily, who is currently at the University of Southern Mississippi.
